Ashel and Jonathan’s wedding took place on an unusually balmy day in Calgary during March. Which day in March, you ask? Well, a very special day – March 14th. If there are any math geeks reading this, you’ll probably understand the significance of this date, especially for the 2015 year – that being Pi Day. Naturally, only Pi Day would be fitting as a wedding date for Ashel, who is a mathematician. The significance of Pi Day on the year 2015 is that March being the third month of the year meant this year’s digits were 3/14/15; in other words, 3.1415, which are the first 5 digits of Pi! There really couldn’t have been a better picked date for this amazing couple.
Ashel’s twin sister, Jenna, described Ashel and Jonathan’s relationship as “amazing and strange”, which is definitely the most perfect description. Ashel has brought out a wild side to Jonathan and they adventure together in wild places doing daredevil activities. Jonathan, who has a climbing wall in his basement, also practices making home-brew beer. They bring out the best in each other and it’s obvious they are completely smitten with each other.
No wedding day is without a small snag… here’s a fun tidbit about their special day. Ashel entrusted Jonathan with bringing the wedding bands to the ceremony. And….. guess what was left at home. Yup. Ashel was REALLY good about the whole thing (though she did give Jonathan a small piece of her mind after the ceremony) and in place of the missing bands, they used Jenna and her Jonathan’s brother’s bands at the ceremony. Later, during the Creatives, their rings were delivered to them by a family member and they exchanged them in a private moment during photos, which was super sweet!
This fun and creative couple naturally had pie as their wedding cake, and danced the rest of the night away at the Calgary Zoo. Thank you so much, Ashel and Jonathan, for the honor of documenting your special day!
Big thanks to Crystal of Sujata Photography for assisting during the day!
Describe your planning process
Ashel and Jonathan: “The Location: Family Church for Ashel’s side and Family Priest for Jonathan’s side. We wanted everyone to have fun, so the Zoo made perfect sense for the Venue. The Style: We didn’t really have a style, we wanted a normal wedding, but fun, happy and laid back.”
What was your favorite part?
Ashel and Jonathan: “Jenna’s speach was unreal. She called us ‘strange, brilliant and fascinating’ We couldn’t be more pleased! I would have cried except the makeup ladies said I wasn’t allowed to, or else.”
Greatest advice to a couple planning their wedding?
Ashel’s advice: “I was told this, and would like to share with others. This day can be perfect, or it can be memorable.”
Jonathan’s advice is two words: “Destination Wedding.” (Haha! Nice one, Jonathan!)
Share a special memory with us!
Ashel and Jonathan: “In the rush of getting ready Jonathan forgot the rings. When I was told by my brother in law John I figured he was playing a joke, just the kind of thing he would do. Turns out he was being sincere and the rings really were still at home. Later we had our own personal ring exchange in Reader Rock Garden with just the two of us. It was such a personal moment where everything seemed quiet and still after the busy morning. After the ceremony we enjoyed the contents of a well stocked cooler full of Innis & Gunn, our favourite beer and throwing a disc around with our wedding party in the park.”
