During the September 2017 long weekend, I had the pleasure of photographing two different weddings, where one wedding had multiple day ceremonies. Andie and Ryan kicked off their wedding ceremonies throughout the week leading up to their big day and invited me to document the Sikh ceremony the day before their ceremony at the Zoo. As per Sikh tradition, I was given a scarf to cover my hair – the aqua-coloured scarf matched my hair colour perfectly, which was amazing.
The following day was their big ceremony at the Calgary Zoo. I just absolutely LOVED the different bridesmaid dresses and the gorgeous Sikh-inspired wedding dress for Andie! At one point during the getting ready, I moved the skirt of the dress over to a different area and was astounded at how heavy the skirt was. Andie, you must have some serious core strength. Props to you.
Although the clouds threatened to rain nearly all day, we only felt a few drops and were spared – which made us feel very lucky! This was the second time I’ve photographed inside the Safari Lodge and it looked so beautiful inside. One of my favorite parts of the day was when Ryan got his old band back together to perform their First Dance song – with Ryan on the vocals for a part of it. What an awesome personal touch!

Describe your planning process!
Andie & Ryan: We wanted something outdoors and fun for our guests so the zoo was a perfect location. We planned everything in about 2 months and so didn’t find it to be a very stressful process.
What was your favorite part of the day?
Andie: I loved how all of the decor and flowers tuned out. Ryan’s performance was probably the highlight of the night for me!
What is your greatest piece of advice to couples planning their wedding?
Andie & Ryan: Keep things simple. Having everything match and be perfect is not going to matter that day. What you will remember is how you felt and if you were stressed about small things it will take away from the enjoyment of the day.
