Such an incredible intimate wedding with this incredible couple – on my own birthday, no less! I would normally reserve the day off, but I really couldn’t say no to Avery and Dustin. They tied the knot at the gorgeous Gerry Thomas Art Gallery in Calgary, which has unfortunately shuttered its doors since the wedding, making this a very special opportunity and experience. Before their nuptials, they did a first look in one of my favourite places in the city (Reader Rock Garden) on a day that had impeccable weather. This amazing couple did such a huge surprise for me when they presented me with my own birthday waffle for my birthday, I was honestly floored! I couldn’t believe they took the time out of their special day to honour my birthday this way – it really says a lot about their amazing personalities and I couldn’t have asked for a better birthday!
(Note: This wedding was pre-COVID.)
Describe your planning process!
Avery & Dustin: The people were most important, so we picked a location where everyone could be there together. We wanted ‘casual-chiq’ so we went with an art gallery where we would not have to have additional decorations and where interesting conversations could happen with the art present. It was surprisingly simple to plan from a distance and most everything came together without any issues!
What was the best part of your day?
Avery & Dustin: The Parmesan Cheese Straws! Our ceremony was amazing! We had only talked once with Tamara and emailed a few times, but our family asked “How long has she known you?” because the ceremony was so personalized. Tamara gently organized our small crowd, and subtly and beautifully guided us through the ceremony. She also performed an “Oath Stone” ceremony, which included a stone that we brought- from Earth Gems- that literally jumped off the table while we were there looking for it.
What is the best piece of wedding planning advice you can give?
Avery & Dustin: Trust your gut – if something isn’t lining up right or you have a funny feeling, listen to it. Also, know what you want and don’t be afraid to put your foot down. Family may try to sway you and put their thoughts and ideas in. It is your day, make sure that you make it what you want.
Share a special memory from the day…
Avery & Dustin: Dustin didn’t expect the first look to be so impactful. He had already seen the dress (he had helped with the alterations), knew what my make-up and hair would look like, but he said “seeing it all together made it real that this was our actual wedding day.” For me, walking up the hill and seeing him standing there waiting for me gave me butterflies. Everything we’ve shared, all of our life experiences together brought us to that moment, and it was beautiful.
